So, I have inflicted upon myself the pain of creating a photography website (erinmccarthygreenephotography.com) and writing a blog. This is my first entry. Why am I doing this? There are a few reasons, really. First, I have no idea what I want to be when I grow up. I’m 68. I’m evolving. In 2018, I began British photographer Emma’ Davies’ A Year With My Camera (https://ayearwithmycamera.com/), an “online foundation course for complete beginner photographers.” Guess what? I learned a lot, “met” a bunch of supportive fellow photography travelers from across the globe, and, best of all, I learned that photography makes me really, really happy. Am I pro level? That’s debatable. But I know for sure that going out into the world with my cameras (an entry level Nikon D3400 and a newer Nikon Z50 mirrorless), processing RAW (Nikon NEF) files in the company’s free NX Studio processing software, and sharing my favorites with an Instagram (and sometimes Facebook) audience brings me pure joy. My mother was a professional wedding photographer, so this late-in-life avocation is also an homage to her artistry, which I honestly never fully appreciated. So, having completed a second year of AYWMC, I have taken on two final projects. One is a documentary portrait project on women who make varied contributions to the 1000 Islands region of New York State (more on that later), and the other is this website, a home for images that still thrill me and another place for an (expanded?) audience to view my work. Will it lead to photography gigs? Maybe. That’s not really my goal, although I will be looking further into becoming a Tilly Project (https://thetillyproject.org/) volunteer photographer. So, have a look at my work in progress. I’ve been right down deep in the photo loading rabbit hole. I’d love some company.
